Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of hereditary diseases in which progressive photoreceptor degeneration results in increasing visual dysfunction. Macular holes are full-thickness retinal tissue defects centered at the fovea. They were first described by Knapp in 1869 in a case of ocular trauma. For the next 100 years, there were further descriptions of macular holes and theories expounded on the cause for the problem, but no therapy was devised.
